Kindergarten & First Grade

In these first years, students use singing games and Orff instruments to explore their first basic melodies. Students begin to learn how to maintain a steady beat in a variety of ways. Also, some basic rhythmic values are introduced and practiced throughout the year. Students will experience short, informal performing opportunities, allowing them to become familiar with concert etiquette and preperation.

What do we learn?

Second & Third Grade

Through the course of two years, students will continue to build on skills from previous grades, though concepts become more complex. Students in these grades will have the opportunity to perform in an organized grade-level performance. The shows are all based on children's literature, but are unique to the specific group of learners and allow for student-led creations. Third grade students will also use the soprano recorder as a tool to help read music, as well as build skills to support playing many beginning band intruments.

Fourth & Fifth Grade

Students in these grades continue to build upon the skills from younger grades, but the pacing becomes quicker and difficult concepts are studied more in depth. Students will read and notate music, play Orff instruments, sing a variety of repertoire, as well as many other tasks which develop musicianship as a whole. Fourth graders will do a large project surrounding prominent genres of music in Colorado. Fifth graders will finish their elementary music experience by performing at their continuation ceremony.
